Four months in 12 minutes. This video shows the inside process of the house renovation from start to finish.
We bought a 70 year old ex local authority house in the north west of England.
We viewed the house a few times and were under no illusion it was going to be easy but when we got the keys we found out!
A house is, by law supposed to be empty on completion but this was far from it. I briefly looked into what we could do and we could have taken the seller to small claims court but the likelihood of getting a good outcome seemed slim so we talked to the seller and she wanted to make things right, so she payed for the first 2 skips that came.
The first job for us was to clear everything out. It took us the whole day but the neighbours came and helped which was amazing and when the first 8 ton skip came the next day it was instantly filled.
Next job was to get all the carpets up as the house smelled, so we were pretty sure once the carpets were away the house would smell better.
Then we got rid of all the curtains, tracks, hardware from the doors, and Tim knocked the partition from the living room to the dining room down to open it up also there was a false wall at the top of the stairs he removed as well.
There were 5 windows that were blown and needed replacing so a company came to just replace the panes.
Next job was to strip the wallpaper, the whole house has 2 layers. I did this with a steamer and the first layer was easy to remove but the second layer was more difficult and one bedroom wall so so difficult it took me the whole day!
Once we saw what we were dealing with, a good clean was next, there was a lot of mildew so I made sure I wore a mask and used a good mould killer. On the bare plaster it was visibly removed great but other spots not so good. It was pretty grim in the utility room so I had to wear a suit…I’m glad when that job was done let me tell you.
Now all the rooms were bare, we realised there were hundreds of wall plugs to be removed, holes and gaps to be filled before we could sand and get ready for paint.
Most of the walls weren’t in that bad a shape but we hired a plasterer to do all the upstairs ceilings , the chimney breast and most of the kitchen. To keep costs down we prepped the walls for him first so he could get strait to skimming.
Then we could finally get some paint on the walls. We know those houses are prone to mould so we used a specific paint for all the exterior walls and durable paint for all the other walls. It really does make a difference when everything is painted. We also painted the kitchen and bathroom ceilings to brighten the rooms up.
We replaced a few pieces of skirting board then
it was time to clean, sand and paint all the trim and doors and put new handles on before all the carpets were layed.
There were a few last minute jobs to do including and then it was time to clean up and hand the house over to tenants.
Job done!
Thanks for watching :)
