About this video

The story begins just before the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Indian Air Force Wing Commander Andy Bajwa and his squadron are deployed to Rajasthan to support ground operations. At the same time, Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri of the Indian Army bids farewell to his wife, promising to return soon, and moves to take command of Alpha Company (120 soldiers) of the 23rd Battalion, Punjab Regiment.

Kuldip is assigned to defend the Longewala post in the desert, which he believes is lightly protected. He is joined by 2nd Lt. Dharamvir Singh Bhakhri, Naib Subedar Mathura Das, and Assistant Commandant Bhairon Singh of the BSF, who knows the desert well. Later, Subedar Ratan Singh arrives with two Jonga-mounted anti-tank guns, strengthening the post.

During a patrol, Kuldip’s team encounters hostile infiltrators working with the Pakistani army. Dharamvir hesitates to kill one of them, which affects him emotionally, but later he proves his courage when he kills a spy on his own mission.

The soldiers endure harsh desert conditions while waiting for the enemy to make a move. During this time, Mathura Das receives leave to see his critically ill wife, but before leaving, he is harshly criticized by Kuldip for wanting to go in the middle of wartime.

On 3 December 1971, Pakistan launches air strikes, officially starting the war. The next day, artillery shelling begins around Longewala. Dharamvir and his patrol soon spot a large Pakistani tank and infantry regiment entering India. Kuldip immediately prepares for defense.

Mathura Das returns to the unit and is forgiven. Kuldip requests air support, but Wing Commander Bajwa informs him that their aircraft cannot fly at night. Kuldip must hold the post alone until dawn. His superior allows him to withdraw, but Kuldip chooses to stand and gives his men the choice to leave — they all stay.

That night, the Battle of Longewala begins. Anti-tank mines set earlier help slow the enemy advance. Das destroys several tanks before being fatally wounded. Ratan Singh sacrifices himself to save his comrades. Bhairon Singh destroys a tank but dies in the process. Dharamvir returns from his patrol but falls in the final charge. The Indian soldiers fight hand-to-hand as Pakistani forces attempt to overrun the post.

By dawn, with the Indian troops nearly exhausted, Bajwa and his squadron finally arrive and launch airstrikes, destroying many Pakistani tanks and forcing the enemy to retreat. India wins the battle, but at a heavy cost.

In the end, Kuldip walks through the battlefield surrounded by the remains of war. The victory is bittersweet, filled with pride for bravery and grief for fallen soldiers.
