Water softeners need salt to regenerate the resin inside the water softener media tank. The salt sits inside the brine tank and when combined with water makes the brine that is sucked up through the brine well into the softener. So one important task that the salt must perform is not clogging the brine well inlet so the brine keeps flowing into the brine well and water can also flow into the brine tank to make brine.
