About this video

JupyterLab Desktop is no longer being developed, so we need a new IDE for Python and Jupyter Notebooks. After 5 years of teaching Python courses, I've tested all the major options to find the best alternative for beginners and scientific computing. This comprehensive comparison covers PyCharm, VS Code, JupyterLab, Spyder, and why I don't recommend AI-first IDEs like Cursor and Windsurf for beginners.

In this tutorial, you'll learn:
* Why JupyterLab Desktop stopped development (security issues with bundled browser)
* Why online interpreters (Google Colab) violate university and company data policies
* JupyterLab's inconvenient workflow (terminal required, can't double-click files)
* Spyder's limited Jupyter Notebook support
* PyCharm vs VS Code: detailed feature comparison
* Why PyCharm is better for beginners (Python-only, cleaner UI, everything built-in)
* VS Code's advantages (open source, massive extension ecosystem, HDF5 file support)
* Why Miniforge works with both IDEs (while micromamba/pixi require VS Code)
* Why beginners should learn programming before using AI coding tools
* The problem with Cursor and Windsurf for Jupyter Notebooks

My recommendation: PyCharm Community Edition for beginners - it now includes free Jupyter Notebook support, has a cleaner interface with only Python-relevant options, and requires zero configuration. VS Code is also excellent if you need specific extensions or your team uses it, but requires more setup time.

Perfect for Python instructors, data scientists, researchers, and anyone doing scientific computing who needs a reliable IDE that works seamlessly with Jupyter Notebooks.
