Bear Expert Rates 9 Movie & TV Bear Attacks 🐻

Wildlife ecologist Rae Wynn-Grant rates nine bear attacks in movies and TV shows, such as "Cocaine Bear," for realism.

Wynn-Grant breaks down the accuracy of brown bear and grizzly-bear attacks, as well as the bears' physiology, in "The Revenant" (2015), starring Leonardo DiCaprio; "Game of Thrones" S3E7 (2013); "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" (2004), with Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd; and "The Edge" (1997), with Anthony Hopkins. She explains the realism of black-bear attacks and behavior in "Cocaine Bear" (2023) and "Backcountry" (2014). Wynn-Grant also looks at Po the giant panda in "Kung Fu Panda" (2008); the polar bears in "The Golden Compass" (2007), with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig; and the mutant bear in "Annihilation" (2018), with Natalie Portman.

Wynn-Grant is a large-carnivore ecologist who has been studying bears for the past 13 years. She has a doctorate in Ecology and Evolution. Her previous research includes human-carnivore conflict with grizzly bears in the Northern Great Plains and black bears in the Western Great Basin. She is a research faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is also a research fellow with the National Geographic Society and a visiting scientist at the American Museum of Natural History.
