⛪ ABOUT AVIGNON
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In 1309, Pope Clement V moved the papal court from Rome to Avignon to escape the chaos of the Italian Peninsula. Over the next 68 years, seven French popes ruled Western Christianity from this city. The Palais des Papes was constructed in under 20 years on the rocky outcrop above the Rhône. The Pont Saint-Bénézet, immortalized in the nursery rhyme "Sur le pont d'Avignon," was built in the 12th century as a crossing to Italy and Spain. The papacy returned to Rome in 1377.
