About the Event:
In 2025, the fields beneath the Santon once again echoed with musket fire, cavalry charges, and rolling artillery as one of Europe’s most ambitious living-history events brought the Battle of Austerlitz back to life. This documentary presented the 2025 Austerlitz Reenactment on the very ground where the Battle of the Three Emperors was fought on 2 December 1805—this time through live action rather than animation.
With more than 1,800 reenactors from over 20 countries, nearly 100 horses, and 16 full-sized cannons, the event surpassed all previous editions. The battlefield was expanded to 250 × 400 meters, allowing a far more authentic depiction of Napoleonic maneuver warfare. The production followed the decisive fighting around Staré vinohrady, where French infantry historically broke the Russo-Austrian lines and the Imperial Guards confronted one another—culminating in a living recreation of François Gérard’s 1810 painting La Bataille d’Austerlitz, 2 Décembre 1805.
The film guided viewers through the reenactment phase by phase using on-screen timestamps, from the opening French advance at 14:00, through intense infantry fire and cavalry mêlées, to the coalition withdrawal and final parade. A specially prepared animation provided a clear bird’s-eye view of the action, aiding tactical understanding of the engagements as they unfolded.
Austerlitz 2025 also marked the final appearance of Mark Schneider as Napoleon, closing a distinguished two-decade portrayal at Europe’s major Napoleonic commemorations.
Forces on the field:
Austro-Russian Coalition:
732 reenactors (one Russian and three Austrian infantry battalions, cavalry, and artillery) under Commander-in-Chief Ondřej Tupý.
French Army:
1,097 reenactors (four line battalions, one Guard battalion, cavalry, and artillery) under Commander-in-Chief Tomáš Doležal.
Portrayed the spirit of Murat by Franky Simon.
This documentary stood as a tribute to 35 years of the Austerlitz Project, founded by Miroslav Jandora, and to the international reenactment community dedicated to preserving Napoleonic history with accuracy and respect.
The animation was created by Lionsberg Cinematic History. This film was made purely out of passion for history. Any unintentional errors are sincerely regretted.
