Rama (Zaheeda Hussain) agrees to marry a much older male, Madanlal (Tarun Bose) to save her grandfather's mansion, , Madanlal decides to sell some artifacts to prospective buyers, including Mr and Mrs Rai. The sale is hampered by heavy rains and the entry of a traveling painter singer, Awara, as well as four bandits, including Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar), who is wanted by the police for the brutal murder of his wife. The events depicted in the film take place on a single night and results in several characters sharing their life stories. It is a fascinating depiction of some of the challenges faced by the poor and by women in Indian society.
