He is credited with <br />cracking Nazi Germany's <br />Enigma Code, saving <br />thousands of lives during the war. After the war, Turing was <br />convicted of gross indecency,<br />a Victorian-era homophobic law. Turing was forced to choose <br />between imprisonment <br />or chemical castration. He chose chemical castration. <br />Two years later, <br />Turing died by suicide. In 2009, British Prime Minister <br />Gordon Brown offered a formal <br />apology for the treatment Turing received. <br />In 2014, he was granted a royal pardon. Turing will appear on the new <br />£50 note by the end of 2021.
