About this video

Let’s talk about the guy who invented computers.

Not him - Him.
This is Alan Turing who was a British mathematician, Cryptanalyst and Logician whose Turing Machine is considered the first general model of a computer. He was also gay.

During World War II, Alan worked for the Government Code & Cipher School at Bletchley Park, Britain’s Codebreaking centre where all the high level intelligence happens.
Here he led Hut 8, where he created the machine that could find settings for the German Enigma Machine, allowing allies to intercept coded messages and defeat the Nazis in many battles.
It’s hard to estimate the precise effect that his work had on the war, but a Professor Jack Copeland estimated that it shortened the war in Europe by more than two years and saved over 14 million lives.

Despite his work for the British government, Alan was convicted for ‘gross indecency’ because of his relationship with a man. He was forced to take hormones designed to reduce his libido, resulting in him taking his own life in 1954.
