About this video

Alan Turing - no one imagines anything

Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine - Alan Turing

Alan Mathison Turing (June 23, 1912 - June 7, 1954) was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist.

Turing made numerous contributions to the development of artificial intelligence. He first gave a test to determine whether a machine is intelligent, the Turing Test. He designed the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. He is widely considered the father of theoretical computer science.

Turing was also a world-class long-distance runner; in a 1948 race, he beat Olympic silver medalist Tom Richards (March 15, 1910 - January 19, 1985) in the same year. As a gay man, Turing was persecuted by the British government of the time for his sexual orientation.
