He designed the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. He is widely considered the father of theoretical computer science. Turing was also a world-class long-distance runner; in a 1948 race, he beat Olympic silver medalist Tom Richards (March 15, 1910 - January 19, 1985) in the same year.
