Air for Air: Dual-Player Instrument Prototype 🎶

About this video

This is a prototype for a work I'm developing titled "Air for Air".

The final concept is for the instrument to be played by two people - one person playing the keys and the other controlling and morphing the sound with the movements of their hand. The aim is to get two people, neither of whom may necessarily be musical, to explore sound and music in a new, fun and interactive way. Gesture is amongst the most basic ways of communication, and this is what the piece uses to encourage interaction and musical exploration between both players. The piece also encourages creativity and spontaneity, in asking people to essentially create music with no forethought or planning, and relying only on communication between both players to generate music.

In its current form, the instrument I've created is mostly a proof of concept and a working prototype, demonstrating it is possible to map hand gestures to instrument controls. I will be building on this, adding support for gestures from a second hand and control of several other parameters for the final version of "Air for Air".
