About this video

This movie is based off of a true event, and recounts the story of one family and their harrowing experience during and after the earthquake, and the emotional and psychological distress that the quake caused them.

On July 28, 1976, at 3:42 am, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck just outside of the city of Tangshan in China. At a shallow depth of 23 kilometers (14.3 miles), the earthquake was felt very violently on the surface, and in minutes, 85% of the buildings in Tangshan collapsed or were deemed unusable. Officially, 242,769 people had died during the earthquake. But when taking into account the missing, the injured who later died, and the deaths in nearby Beijing and Tianjin, scholars accepted that at least 300,000 died.

The movie is based off of a book by Zhang Ling, and went on to become a major box office success.
