I know this might sound controversial, but I don’t think Africans should be chasing unicorns. That whole Silicon Valley mindset—trying to build billion-dollar startups—just doesn’t fit where we are. It’s short-sighted, and honestly, a bit toxic. Business in Africa isn’t just about valuations or impressing investors. It’s about impact. The systems we’re using—like credit models and risk assessments—were built in Europe for European economies, and they’re holding us back. If we want real progress, we need to stop copying and start building our own path, based on our reality.
