Abuja shut down as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) threw its full support behind the indefinite strike by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), escalating what it called a decisive battle against injustice and oppression. The action, led by the Joint Unions Action Congress (JUAC), paralysed public services across the nation’s capital and heightened tensions between labour and authorities.
In a strongly worded statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero accused the FCTA leadership of wage abuse, diversion of pensions, intimidation of workers, and blatant violations of labour laws. The Congress alleged that five months’ wage awards and promotion arrears had been illegally withheld, while pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions had allegedly gone unremitted since May 2025—acts the NLC described as “economic sabotage” and “capital accumulation by dispossession.”
The NLC also condemned what it termed “fascistic tactics” against workers, including workplace restrictions, intimidation, and the incarceration of union activists. In response, it ordered a total escalation of the strike, directing all affiliate unions in the FCT to comply fully.
Labour further instructed workers to mobilise massively to the National Industrial Court on January 26, 2026, and announced daily prayer and solidarity gatherings across the FCT. Declaring the dispute a broader people’s struggle, the NLC vowed to intensify action if demands remain unmet, as Abuja continues to feel the economic and administrative shockwaves of the showdown.
