Why China Is Banning AI Preaching and Digital Rituals

China has initiated a sweeping crackdown on the commercialization of religion online, targeting activities such as AI-based preaching, internet fortune-telling, and religious livestreaming. This move follows scandals involving prominent religious figures, including the abbot of the Shaolin Temple, who is under investigation for embezzlement and misconduct. The newly issued code of conduct bans nearly all forms of religious content creation online unless done by licensed religious institutions. It also prohibits the use of AI for religious communication and the monetization of rituals through digital platforms.
