IUD Insertion & IUD Removal (Copper Paragard, Mirena) (Part 2). Intrauterine devices, or IUDs, are extremely effective, long-acting, reversible forms of birth control. The Paragard IUD uses copper while the Mirena IUD uses the hormone progesterone. They are both inserted in a similar fashion and can be done in the office. This video shows how to insert and remove the Paragard IUD. Edit: Your provider might measure or "sound" the length of your cervix and uterus first. They will then adjust the little blue marker on the straw to where the opening of your cervix is so they know the appropriate distance to insert.
