About this video
This is a short video that explains how encoding/encrypting/decrypting/decoding work together in an example. We follow the Sage code from W. Stein’s textbook “Elementary Number Theory”. The scenario is that Michael wishes to send Nikita a secret message. Nikita creates an encryption scheme (RSA) that only she can decrypt (probably). Her encryption method is public. Michael encodes his message as an integer using ASCII, then encrypts it via Nikita’s public encryption key and sends this to Nikita via an email or text message. Theoretically anyone could intercept that message, but would have a hard time decrypting it. Nikita receives the message and can easily decrypt it, then decode it to read Michael’s message. This is for my online number theory class.
