The category five hurricane made landfall Tuesday evening, with the parishes of St Elizabeth and St James in the southwest of the island taking the brunt of the impact, directly in the eye's path.
At least 20 people died in one Haitian village when a flooded river surged through homes, trapping residents under the rubble.
Hurricane Melissa then weakened to a still dangerous category three, before slamming into the coast of Cuba in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The storm weakened further but will still be a category two when it hits the Bahamas.
