About this video
The central idea is that life can be understood as a form of computation, a perspective pioneered by pioneers such as Alan Turing and John von Neumann. They proposed that biological processes and computer algorithms share the same fundamental logical principles.
Alan Turing, through his theory of morphogenesis, demonstrated that complex patterns in nature, such as a zebra's stripes, could be generated by a set of mathematical instructions, suggesting that biological development follows a "natural algorithm."
John von Neumann developed the concept of "self-reproducing automata," drawing a direct parallel between machine replication and cellular reproduction. He viewed the genome as a source code that, when executed, results in the growth and development of an organism. DNA and RNA function as software containing the instructions for life.
Gene activation operates as a logical "on/off" system. The growth of a living being is seen as the execution of its genetic program. Despite its limitations, the view of life as computation offers an extremely productive framework for science. The work of Turing and von Neumann paved the way for revolutionary fields such as bioinformatics and synthetic biology, allowing scientists to investigate biological processes at their most fundamental level: information processing.
