With grant assistance from Houston Arts Alliance, we built an oversized office set on the patio of Frenetic Theater in Houston’s East End. Robert set up his camera to shoot sideways, and we developed mind-bending choreography to express the experience of feeling sideways in life or in any given situation. Choreographed by Rebecca (Rivkah) French Filmed and edited by Robert Thoth Performed by Mallory Horn, Kira Boerkircher, Dorianne Castillo, Mollie Miller, Taylor Martin, and Carlos Guzman Music by Zoe Keating Created in 2012 by FrenetiCore Dance Rivkah French is an award-winning queer contemporary choreographer in Houston, TX. They embody freedom in movement by breaking dance, gender and societal norms -- merging multiple dance styles, powerful themes, and innovative technologies. Rivkah engages participants in a journey of transformational discovery and expression through performance and social practice events. Their creations have been commissioned by the Twilight Epiphany Turrell Skyspace, CounterCurrent Festival, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, NOLA Fringe Festival, Italy’s Trieste Film Festival, and Station Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. French has produced 2-3 original performance works per season since 2003 and created 10 dances for film. Between 2003-2009 they founded FrenetiCore Dance, the Houston Fringe Festival, and built the black box Frenetic Theater. Rivkah has led movement for incarcerated youth with Children's Prison Arts Project and taught homeless LGBTQ teens at the Grace Place outreach center. They created a Queer Dance Workshop for university students and the south’s first adult Queer Camp. Rivkah is currently focused on developing spaces and experiences that foster healing and empowerment through self-expression for the LGBTQ+ community; expanding the field of Queer Dance Theory, and creating new movement techniques fusing global dance styles with contemporary Western dance. French values the revolutionary power of art on individuals and societies. They are most interested in work that provokes audiences to discover profound truths about the human condition.
