Protecting your digital environment does not stop once a document has been printed. Secure Print Release protects the document until time of release, and while regulations and policies can be put in place, steps to change user behavior beyond the printer need to be considered as well. This is where watermarking and digital signatures can be valuable, as they help protect the life of the document after it has been printed.

I’m on a train. Now I’m sitting down on a train.
I’ve got frightfully important, top secret documents.
I’m leaving the train, and I’ve left my frightfully important, top secret documents on my seat.
Would I still leave those documents if my name was printed at the bottom of each page?
And even if I did leave them, would it help my workplace if they could trace the error back to me? I mean it probably won’t help me …
Let’s flip it around. I’m in the office and I’ve just collected documents I’ve printed out. At the bottom of each page is a message - a reminder to treat any workplace document with care.
Watermarking … it’s a clever wee feature in PaperCut that allows you to print a digital signature or custom text on every page you print. Watermarks can be printed in the top or bottom margins of the page, or repeated across the entire page.
And don’t get me started on digital signatures. Oh ok, then. Digital signatures are teeny tiny entries at the bottom of the page that allow you to do all those cryptographic security things that the experts know about.
Use these in conjunction with secure print release, and you’re doing everything possible in the whole world to protect your documents before and after printing.
And that’s what watermarking and digital signatures are all about at PaperCut.
