Every single day, from the time we wake up, to the time we go to bed… we constantly read.
While this skill comes easy to some children, many struggle to grasp this concept.
And some… well, the mountain seems almost too steep to climb.
I asked our experts for their top strategies to help children who seriously struggle hard in learning to read…

1. Preview The Text
2. Anticipation Guides

As a parent, reading is often something that’s challenging to teach. Most folks today have a pretty good grasp of reading… but how do you explain the crazy aspects of the English language to a five-year-old?
Words like Colonel, Receipt, Rapport, and others can be flat out impossible…
Get to a higher level, more advanced reading… then it gets REALLY tricky!
9 expert reading strategies used by the pros
1. Previewing The Text
a. This strategy helps children Learn how to navigate subject-specific textbooks and resources
b. Previewing is used to Locate information in different texts using;
i. The Tables of contents
ii. The Indices if available
iii. Or even a Navigation bar if reading something online
2. Anticipation Guides
a. The first part of this strategy is to Examine and Analyze the text
b. Next, the reader will Determine How Those Features Will Help them
i. Find Information
ii. Use That Information For Learning
c. There are some Keywords to use During This Strategy such as;
i. Survey
ii. Recite
iii. Review
iv. Reflect
3. The third expert reading strategy is Extending Vocabulary
a. This strategy is designed to help Identify new or unfamiliar words
b. And at the same time Create a visual reference
c. With this identification, it’s time to roll on to strategy number 4
4. Using Context To Find Meaning - This strategy helps tackle unknown words that a young reader may come across
a. If an unknown word arises while reading
i. First, Look at the words surrounding it
ii. Then, so long as you understand the sentence surrounding it… you can more easily determine the meaning of the unknown word.
5. Reading Between The Lines, otherwise known as Inferences
a. Helps Draw specific meaning from the text
b. You do this by Connecting your prior knowledge and experience to the text
c. With this information, you can make good guesses about;
i. What is
ii. What may
iii. Or What did happen
6. Strategy number 6 is Making Notes
a. First, just like the title of this strategy… Write notes while reading
b. Doing this will help a young reader learn how to identify important information
c. This can be very helpful when;
i. Studying for a test
ii. Researching
iii. Or Generating content for a writing task
7. Drawing Conclusions
a. A good rule-of-thumb to follow is the;
i. I Read
ii. I Think
iii. And Therefore, concept
b. Doing this helps Develop content and opinions for persuasive writing or debate
c. Along with assisting in the Gathering of information
d. Once you’ve collected the data… Decide which information is important and which is not
8. The 8th reading strategy is Making Judgements -
a. First, Review what was read
b. Second, Reflect on the learning you experienced while reading
c. Ask questions about the importance
d. Assess the different viewpoints and perspectives that could be taken from the text
9. The last expert reading strategy for today is Responding To Text.
a. This strategy is designed to Expand the readers understanding of what they read by;
i. Seeing what’s written
ii. Hearing different Ideas
iii. And Thoughts
iv. As well as the Questions put forth by others
b. Finally, Responding to text allows the reader to Make personal connections to a specific topic by expressing their own thoughts, ideas, and questions.
