Azure SQL Encryption is a feature that allows you to encrypt your data in Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance. There are two types of encryption available in Azure SQL: Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and Always Encrypted. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) TDE is a form of encryption that encrypts the entire database. This means that all data stored in the database is encrypted, including backups, snapshots, and transaction logs. TDE uses a symmetric key, which is stored in the database, to encrypt the data. TDE is easy to implement and does not require any changes to your application. It also does not affect the performance of your database. TDE encrypts data at rest, but does not encrypt data in transit. Always Encrypted Always Encrypted is a newer form of encryption that encrypts individual columns within a database. This allows you to encrypt only the data that needs to be protected, such as credit card numbers or social security numbers. Always Encrypted uses a combination of symmetric and asymmetric keys to encrypt the data. The symmetric key is stored in Azure Key Vault, while the asymmetric key is stored in the client application. This means that the database administrator cannot access the encryption keys, ensuring that the data remains secure. Always Encrypted requires changes to your application, as the encryption and decryption of data is handled by the client. This can affect the performance of your application, as the encryption and decryption process can be resource-intensive.
