About this video

Join The Data Incubator and Field Cady, Data Scientist at Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) for the next installment of our free online webinar series, Data Science in 30 Minutes: Choosing Your Data Science Career Path. http://www.thedataincubator.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/field-cady-6597786/ Some data scientists work for one employer on a single large, long-lived project. Others function as consultants who move quickly between different projects, datasets, and even industries. Each of these paths can make for a rewarding career (or first job) in data science, but they have their own pros and cons. This talk will compare the skills they teach and require, the best ways to approach problems, and the realities of the day-to-day work. About the speakers: Field Cady is the author of The Data Science Handbook and works at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). He holds a BS in physics from Stanford and did graduate work in computer science at CMU. Previously he worked at several Big Data startups. Most of his data science career has been spent consulting, for clients ranging from small internet startups to giant financial firms. Most of his career has been consulting, but he is currently working a "real job" focusing on a single large project. Michael Li is President of Data Science at Pragmatic Institute, responsible for defining and leading Pragmatic's data courses. Michael founded The Data Incubator in 2014 as a platform for training and placing data scientists. Previously, he worked as a data scientist (Foursquare), Wall Street quant (D.E. Shaw, J.P. Morgan), and a rocket scientist (NASA). He completed his PhD at Princeton as a Hertz fellow and read Part III Maths at Cambridge as a Marshall Scholar. At Foursquare, Michael discovered that his favorite part of the job was teaching and mentoring smart people about data science and so he built up a successful startup focused on what he really loves.
