Caption for more details!! My 5 protective style no-no’s ❌
1. ✨Never apply products directly to my scalp✨
Before my appointment, I kindly ask my braider to not use any products on my scalp. ☺️This includes oil, gel, edge control, foam + JAM. These all help to achieve a more “laid” look. But I usually get boho braids so I don’t mind them being a little bit messier.🤣🤗
But these products can also cause tons of build-up on the scalp (… a scalp which won’t be thoroughly cleansed for weeks/ months😭)
2. ✨Never neglect cleansing✨
A healthy + clean scalp is extremely important—even while wearing protective styles. With working out regularly, it’s important for me to shampoo my scalp weekly in order to properly remove dirt, sweat, + dead skin cells. A healthy scalp is the foundation to growing healthy hair!🙌🏾
3. ✨Never keep my braids in more than 6-8 weeks✨
This is a VERY personal preference. 🤣 But this allows my scalp to be THOROUGHLY cleansed. And my natural hair to be properly hydrated/ deep conditioned to keep my curls healthy.🤩
Taking my braids out also allows my scalp + hair to have a break from the added tension + weight of braids.
4. ✨I’d never wet or wash my hair, BEFORE detangling✨
I ALWAYS detangle (with a bit of oil) after removing each braid. This allows me to remove shed hair, breakup any residue at my scalp, + remove tangles. Waiting to detangling your hair in the shower, can lead to ton of matting😩 (and unnecessary breakage and hair loss☹️).
Let me know your tips!!☺️ What do you agree or disagree with?? Let’s chat below! 🤗
[Remember these, all of my personal guidelines that I follow to keep my hair long + healthy. And everyone’s hair is different, so always follow your own hair’s specific needs ☺️]
