Overview

The BMW 5-series has been the middle child in BMW's luxury sedan lineup for nearly 50 years. In that time, it has earned a reputation as the ultimate compromise between the sporty compact 3-series and the large and luxurious 7-series. Three velvety powertrains are offered through the lineup, including a feisty four-cylinder in the 530i, a mighty inline-six in the 540i, and a seamless plug-in hybrid arrangement in the range-topping 550e model. The jack-of-all-trades approach works pretty well for the newest 5-series, but it sacrifices some of the athletic personality found in smaller Bimmers — and previous versions of itself — to better embody a smooth, business-class attitude.

What's New for 2026?

Standard 5-series models continue into 2026 unchanged, except for the addition of a new flat tire kit that includes everything needed to mend a stricken tire on the side of the road. A new Frozen Portimao Blue metallic exterior color and Dark Violet and Taupe leather options are now also available on the order sheet. The plug-in hybrid 550e gets a more significant update, with an improved AC charging rate of 11 kW, up from 7.4 kW previously.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 5-series is offered in 530i, 540i, and 550e guises, with the 530i getting a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The 540i comes with all-wheel drive standard as well as a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six. Both are augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. The plug-in hybrid 550e is powered by an inline-six and an electric motor that combine for 483 horsepower; all-wheel drive is standard. In our experience with a 530i, the ride is smooth but still provides a sense of subtle athleticism. The heavier 540i skews more towards luxury than sport. Cornering grip is reasonable, especially with the M Sport package's upgraded suspension. Speaking of the M Sport package, it also adds better brakes, which resulted in a 530i's heroic 156-foot stop from 70 mph at our test track.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside the 5-series' cabin, there is plenty of room for adult riders to get comfortable in the front and rear seats, and the interior looks appropriately deluxe. While genuine leather upholstery remains an option, BMW also offers a vegan-friendly option called Veganza. All models come with an automatic climate control system with vents that are cleverly integrated into the dashboard design to hide them from view. A tilt-and-slide sunroof is standard, but you can also opt for a large, fixed glass roof that extends into the rear seat area. The optional Luxury Seating package adds heated and ventilated front seats with more power adjustments and a massage feature; the Premium package adds a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, and more; and the Executive package includes the panoramic glass roof as well as a power rear sunshade, glass interior controls, and an interior camera. We fit six carry-on suitcases inside the 5-series's trunk, and with the rear seats folded, we managed to squeeze in a total of 20.
