First sodium naphthalene-2-sulfonate is prepared by the sulfonation of naphthalene at 165 °C. The sodium naphthalene-2-sulfonate is then fused with molten potassium hydroxide at 300-310 °C, then the 2-naphtholate is acidified forming 2-naphthol.
