10-Day Kyushu Japan Travel Guide 🌸

This is our recommended itinerary for 10 days in Kyushu covering Fukuoka, Beppu, Kagoshima, Mount Aso, Takachiho, and Kumamoto. Kyushu is Japan’s 3rd largest island and is known for having gorgeous nature (volcanos, mountains, grasslands), colorful soothing hot springs (both to see and soak in), and also amazing food (tonkotsu ramen, horse sashimi, black pork shabu shabu).

Most people go to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka for their first trip to Japan, but if you want something different, definitely check out Kyushu!

Fukuoka
🚲 Use Charichari bike share for a cheap way to get around
☕️ Check out the Starbucks at Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine designed by a famous architect
🏰 Walk around Maizuru Park and see Fukuoka Castle

Beppu
🥚 Try food at the jigokus cooked using hot spring water
🚌 Get a 1 day unlimited Beppu city bus ticket to see all the jigokus
🛀 Traditional houses in Beppu don’t have showers. Everyone bathes at the public onsen
🥾 Add 1 day if you love onsens or hiking

Kagoshima
⛴️ Buy a CUTE one day pass for unlimited transportation around the city
🌋 Learn about volcanos at Sakurajima Visitor Center
🛁 Soak your feet in a free foot bath at the Sakurajima Volcanic Shore Park
🌳 Add 2 days to visit Yakushima Island, known for its gorgeous cedar forests

Mount Aso
🚗 Doable as a day trip from Kumamoto or Takachiho, but need a car
🅿️ Mt. Aso visitor center has latest info and maps on hikes
🏇 Go horseback riding in Kusasenri or take a helicopter to the volcano
📺 See the Usopp, Robin, and Franky One Piece statues

Takachiho
🚗 Get a rental car for flexibility
♨️ Add 1 day to visit Kurokawa Onsen town

Kumamoto
🍖 Try thick cut tonkatsu and Akagyu red wagyu beef
🍸 Try Kumamoto shochu
📺 Kumamoto is the birthplace of the One Piece manga author. Visit his characters around the city!
