Check out this new gameplay demo and impressions from 007 First Light, the upcoming James Bond game created by Hitman developers and running in the Glacier Engine. The demo featured three distinct areas: a snowy survival prologue in Iceland, a high-tech training facility in Malta, and a large sandbox mission in London. From what has been shown so far, the game combines espionage and cinematic action, creating a spy adventure that at times recalls the style of modern action-adventure titles Tomb Raider and Uncharted.

📝 SUMMARY

This new gameplay demo of 007 First Light showcases three diverse locations powered by the Glacier Engine. It successfully blends IO Interactive’s tactical stealth with great cinematic action, drawing strong comparisons to the adventurous style of Uncharted.

🕵️‍♂️ MORE THAN JUST HITMAN IN A TUXEDO

We recently spent some time with 007: First Light, and we can tell you right now: any fears that this would just be "Hitman in a tuxedo" were completely misplaced. While the DNA of IO Interactive is there, this is a distinct, cinematic beast that captures the raw, unpolished energy of a young James Bond perfectly.

Forget the seasoned veteran; First Light is a reimagined origin story. You play as a 26-year-old James Bond (voiced and modeled by Patrick Gibson), an ambitious but reckless MI6 recruit. After a heroic stint in the Navy, Bond is scouted for the newly revived Double 0 program. The plot follows his journey to earn his iconic license to kill while unraveling a conspiracy involving a rogue agent.

❄️ STEALTH SURVIVAL

The first thing that struck us is how much more vocal and physical this game is compared to Hitman. Playing as the 26-year-old Bond (Patrick Gibson), we felt the weight of his inexperience. In the Iceland prologue, he’s not a ghost; he’s a survivor. Washing ashore, bruised and scrambling, Bond projects a level of vulnerability we rarely see in this franchise, reminiscent of Lara Croft’s gritty 2013 reboot.

One of the standout features is the Bluff mechanic. During a mission at a Kensington gala, we got caught in a restricted hallway. Instead of reaching for a silenced pistol, we used Bond’s charm. A dialogue prompt appeared, and we managed to talk our way out of it with a clever lie, using intel we overheard earlier. It’s "smart stealth" evolved. Now you’re not just hiding in a closet; you’re hiding in plain sight using your wit.

🔫 THE LICENSE TO KILL SYSTEM

The combat flow is brilliant. Unlike other shooters, you can’t just go guns blazing from the start. The game actually restricts your firearm until a situation officially escalates. We loved the tension of waiting for that "License to Kill" prompt to flash on the screen.

When things go south, the melee combat is surprisingly brutal. In one scrap in a Malta training facility, we were slamming guards into museum glass and using a nearby keyboard as an improvised weapon. It feels very dirty and fun, exactly how a young Bond should be like.

🌍 FINAL THOUGHTS

What we noticed is that the mission structure seems remarkably diverse. From the icy shores of Iceland to the sun-drenched streets of Malta and the social puzzling of London, the different environments ensure the game never feels repetitive. IOI has managed to keep the player freedom they are famous for while injecting the blockbuster energy of a Naughty Dog title. This isn't a veteran; this isn't a superhero. This kid is dangerous, and you can feel he's on the verge of becoming something worth following throughout the entire story.

💡 WHY IT WORKS

- The Sandbox: The London mission felt massive. We spent a good chunk of time just eavesdropping on NPCs to unlock different "mission stories".

- The Gadgets: Using a laser-cutting watch to bypass a security panel felt like classic Bond, but the way it integrates into the HUD feels very modern.

- Action and Stealth: It nails the origin feel by making Bond vulnerable, turning every mistake into a desperate scramble for survival with pure chaos sequences.

- Weaponized Charm: The Bluff mechanic finally lets you use Bond’s wit to talk your way out of a gunfight.

- Cinematic Exploration: It blends Hitman’s sandbox depth with the cinematic scale of a 007 movie.
