Leprosy has existed for thousands of years and is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium leprae. It affects Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system, leading to loss of sensation, unnoticed injuries, ulcers, and permanent tissue damage.

The disease spreads through respiratory droplets from untreated individuals. Thankfully, we now have effective treatments like Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), which can completely kill the bacteria.
