Protesters rally after deadly Rio police raid, demanding accountability
Favela residents rode motorcycles to Rio de Janeiro's government palace on Wednesday, October 29, demanding justice after a police operation that killed at least 119 people became the deadliest in Brazil's history.
Demonstrators waved Brazilian flags with red stains, as they converged on the government palace, holding banners and chanting for accountability.
The October 28 operation killed at least 119 people, according to Rio police, including four officers, though public defenders said the final count would rise to at least 132.
"The purpose is political, and the bodies they are taking are ours, the bodies of Black people and poor people," said Rute Sales, a favela resident who joined the protest.
