क्या है लोहड़ी शब्द का अर्थ? लोहड़ी का पर्व मकर संक्रांति से एक दिन पहले वाली रात को मनाया जाता है. पंजाब के इस खास पर्व के नाम लोहड़ी का अर्थ है- ल (लकड़ी), ओह (गोह मतलब सूखे उपले) और ड़ी (रेवड़ी), इसलिए इस दिन मूंगफली, तिल, गुड़, गजक, चिड़वे, मक्के को लोहड़ी की आग पर से वारना करके खाने की परंपरा है. इस पर्व में 20-30 दिन पहले से बच्चे लोहड़ी के लोक गीत गाकर लकड़ी और उपले इकट्ठा करते हैं. उसके बाद मकर संक्रांति के एक दिन पहले चौराहे या मुहल्ले में किसी खुले स्थान पर आग जलाकर उपले की माला चढ़ाते हैं. इसे चर्खा चढ़ाना कहा जाता हैं.

After that, a day before Makar Sankranti, a fire is lit at some open place in the intersection or locality and a garland of cow dung cakes is offered. This is called Charkha Chadhana.
