New Year’s Day January 1, 45 B.C. After several centuries
of the Roman calendar,
the Julien calendar
was implemented. Following the solar rather
than lunar year, the Julien
calendar was decreed by
Roman dictator, Julius Caesar. To design the calendar,
Caesar enlisted the aid of
Sosigenes, an Alexandrian astronomer. The year was calculated
to be 365 and 1/4 days. Caesar added 67 days
to 45 B.C., making 46 B.C.
begin on January 1. The calendar was
not completely accurate,
and the Gregorian calendar
was implemented in 1582.
