Weāre in our Gmail inbox
To download an individual email, we first need to click into it
Iāll choose the email I want to download and click on it once to open it
Now this email has an attachment.
When I download that email, the attachment will be downloaded as well and should work in the email as normal.
To download this specific message, Iāll move my mouse pointer to the 3 dots icon on the top right of that individual email
There are more options behind this link so lets click on it once to see them
From the list shown, Iāll going to scroll down to near the bottom and Iāll choose the option called āDownload messageā
Youāll see that straightaway the message is downloaded and Iām going to double click on it to open it.
Iām using an Apple Mac so the email is opened in the default Mail application.
Andāll you see that the email and the attachment have been successfully downloaded and are working as expected.
Just like in Gmail, I can also right click on that attachment and still open or save it separately from the email if I wish to
Now if youāre working on Windows or a different operating system then the email may not open and play as easily for you.
You need to have a default email application installed on your laptop or computer.
If you havenāt got one installed then you can find lots of good free email clients that will work with your downloaded email.
If the email isnāt opening for you Iād suggest you search for āfree desktop email clientā and install one of the applications you find from that search.
Do make sure you research each beforehand and find the best one for your needs.
Downloading a larger conversation, with multiple emails, can be a little bit trickier in Gmail.
Letās go back to our Gmail inbox
And Iāll choose an email conversation that has a number of emails and replies and has some attachments added also.
If I click into the first email and download it as we did previously, when I open that email youāll see that only that first email has been downloaded.
To download the entire email conversation
I need to return to the email detail
And scroll right to the bottom of the page
In the very last email if I click on the 3 dots icon again and choose to download the message,
When I open that email youāll see that the full conversation has been downloaded.
Rather annoyingly however, the attachments in the conversation haven't been downloaded with the email message.
If you want to store the attachments as well you have two options.
First you can navigate to the individual email with the attachment and if you move your mouse over the actual attachment there are options to download it directly or to save it to your Google Drive.
Iāll choose to download it and youāll see that it is saved straightaway.
If you want to keep the attachment with the message, the way to do this is to stay in the specific message with the attachment
And if you click on the 3 dots icon and choose to Download the message as before
If we open up that download email youāll see that both the attachment has been downloaded
as well as the email and any previous emails that were sent in the conversation.
If you right click on that attachment you can still save and view that image separately as you could in Gmail.
