Then in 1960 three Chinese became the first to summit via the northeast ridge: Gombu, Yin-wa Hey and fu chu wang. And in 1963 six Americans summited Jim Whitaker and Nawang Gombu, Barry Bishop, Lute Jerstad via the southwest ridge, and Tom Hornbein and Willie Unseold climbed it via the impressive west ridge and north face, and descended via the southeast ridge, becoming the first to do a traverse of the mountain.
