But in a Philippine town, these materials are used to make sculptures. STORYLINE: These ice carving artists are in a big rush. They are competing for the most beautiful ice sculpture. Since 2004, Paete's "Ice Carving and Garnishing Competition" (annual competition of vegetable, fruit and ice carving) attracts hundreds of people. It takes long hours and hard work to turn these ice cubes in to works of art. Aurelio Paraiso, is Paete town Vice-mayor and he explains that a sculpture can be made of several materials. "From wood carving using wood to fruit, to ice, to butter to chocolate, styro (Styrofoam), the principle is still there, it is still carving it is still sculpture." The tradition of carving ice, fruit and vegetables started in the 1980's after a shortage of wood due to serious deforestation. The competition only started in 2004, but quickly made the town famous. Paete, in the Philippine province of Laguna is now know as the "Carving Capital of the Philippines". Once the sculptures are done, they are assessed by judges who chose the best one. John Rie Quito, is an ice carver and he says he's happy to participate in the competition. "I am very happy doing this because when other people see my creation and specially when they admire it my heart is overwhelmed." While some artists carve the ice, others prefer fruit or vegetables. Everything is made in front of the public and demands a lot of attention from the the participants. Using basic manual tools, artists create eye-catching sculptures like this one with six fish. Paete's carvers are famous and their skills are in demand abroad. According to Paraiso, nearly 4,000 carvers from Paete work overseas and send money back to their families.
