Alan Turing was a brilliant English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, and cryptanalyst — widely regarded as the father of modern computing and artificial intelligence. His groundbreaking ideas laid the foundation for much of the technology we use today. During World War II, Turing worked at Bletchley Park, the top-secret British codebreaking center. His creation of the Bombe machine was crucial in cracking the German Enigma code, a breakthrough that helped shorten the war by years and save millions of lives. After the war, he continued to shape the future of technology by designing the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine) and introducing the concept of the Turing Test, a fundamental idea in artificial intelligence. In 1952, Turing’s life took a tragic turn when he was prosecuted for homosexuality, which was a crime in the UK at the time. To avoid imprisonment, he underwent chemical castration, a punishment that deeply affected his health and spirit. Turing died in 1954 at just 41 years old. His death was officially ruled a suicide by cyanide poisoning, though some believe it may have been accidental. Decades later, the UK government issued a formal apology, and in 2013 he was granted a posthumous royal pardon. Today, Alan Turing’s legacy lives on in every computer, smartphone, and AI system.
