在共同的学习生活中，毛泽东、蔡和森、萧子升等有志青年结下友谊，同时湖南私立周南女子师范学校的陶斯咏、向警予、杨开慧等女学生也和他们因志趣相投走到了一起，一个先进青年学生组成的读书会成了他们学习、交流与思想碰撞的纽带。
然而，动荡的时局打破了学生们的校园生活，在反对中日亲善的斗争中，军阀汤芗铭以武力逼走孔校长，毛泽东也险遭逮捕，残酷的现实使毛泽东对教育救国与改良主义信仰产生了动摇。
